Іnflammatory and degenerative diseases of the temporomandibular joint: the current status of the problem (literature review)

Summary. The article presents modern views on the incidence, practical value and treatment of inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in the practice of the rheumatologist and dentist. By the example of the conducted studies, it has been shown that these illnesses may have a course as an integral part of arthritic syndrome in psoriatic, rheumatoid, infectious arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and osteoarthritis. The analysis of the worked out sources made it possible to conclude that each case of arthritis in the TMJ requires a compulsory assessment of arthritic status, occlusion and objective examination in order to detect structural changes. The article emphasizes the importance of pathogenetic the­rapy in each individual case, demonstrates the algorithms of modern management of patients with TMJ diseases.
